Inside a 100-Level Campaign: How Nerdania Games Get Harder

By the Nerdania team · 11 October 2026 · 3 min read

Every game on Nerdania comes with a 100-level campaign. You start at level 1, and each level you clear unlocks the next. You cannot skip ahead. This page explains why we built the games this way, how difficulty grows from level to level, and how to get the most out of a campaign.

Why levels instead of endless play?

Many free games are designed to keep you playing for as long as possible. We wanted something different: games with a clear sense of progress and natural places to stop. Levels give you both.

  • A clear goal. "Clear level 23" is more motivating than "get a higher score than last time".
  • A natural stopping point. Finishing a level is a good moment to put the device down, which helps families keep game time under control.
  • Visible improvement. Looking back from level 60 to level 10 shows you exactly how much you have learned.

Why you cannot skip levels

It can be tempting to jump straight to level 50, but the early levels are where you learn the rules and the basic skills. Each level is designed to teach or test one small thing before adding the next. Skipping them usually means hitting a wall later without knowing why. Earning each level also makes reaching the high numbers feel genuinely satisfying.

How difficulty grows

Good difficulty curves are gentle and steady. Rather than making everything harder at once, each game turns one or two "dials" a little at a time. Depending on the game, those dials include:

  • Size. More cards in Memory Match Masters, bigger grids in Pattern Painter and Odd One Out, larger boards in Sudoku Sanctum and Queens Court.
  • Length. One more step in Sequence Spark, a longer route in Path Recall Adventure, longer words in Word Wizard Scramble.
  • Time. Slightly shorter timers in games like Math Dash Challenge and Quick Count Quest.
  • Speed. Faster enemies, traffic and meteors in arcade games such as Star Siege and Hop Havoc.
  • Complexity. Trickier number rules in Number Detective, or more pipes and junctions in Copper Current.

Because the dials turn slowly, most players find that each new level feels only a little harder than the last – challenging, but achievable.

Fair puzzles, every time

For puzzle games, a level is only fair if it can actually be solved. Our puzzle games are built to guarantee that. For example, Sudoku Sanctum uses boards with a single solution, the sliding tiles in Mosaic Vault start from legal shuffles, and the light panels in Lumen Lock are generated from legal switches. If a level seems impossible, there is always a way through – it just has not been found yet.

Where your progress is kept

You do not need an account to play, so your campaign progress is saved in your browser's storage on your own device. That has two consequences worth knowing:

  • If you play on a phone and later on a computer, each device has its own progress.
  • Clearing your browser's site data or using a private browsing window will reset your progress.

We chose this approach on purpose: it means we do not need to collect names, emails or passwords from anybody – including children. You can read more in our privacy policy.

Tips for climbing a campaign

  1. Play the early levels properly. Use them to learn the controls and rules rather than rushing.
  2. When you get stuck, take a break. A level that feels impossible at night is often easy the next morning.
  3. Learn one strategy at a time. Our guides on memory games, logic puzzles, word puzzles and mental maths each explain techniques that help in the later levels.
  4. Celebrate milestones. Levels 10, 25, 50 and 75 are all worth a little cheer.
  5. Try a different game. If one campaign stalls, switch to another category for a while. Many skills carry over.

What happens at level 100?

Reaching level 100 in any Nerdania game is a real achievement – it takes many hours of practice and genuine skill. After that, you can keep playing to improve your scores and climb the high-score tables, or start fresh with one of our more than a hundred other games.
